In a January 2026 survey of 411 college administrators conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education, 86% agreed that faculty hired today face more difficult teaching and research circumstances than they did five years ago. More than half, 56%, also said faculty morale at their institution had worsened over the previous year.
When administrators were asked what was contributing most to low faculty morale:
47% cited increased workload
41% cited political and legislative pressures
39% pointed to stagnant salaries or inadequate compensation
37% cited growing student needs and expectations
There isn’t one challenge making the modern professor’s job harder. It’s the accumulation of many.
